   Helping a Federal Department reposition
Consumer/Australian Tax Office/Asia Pacific/Wells Haslem Mayhew Strategic Public Affairs Pty Ltd.

This large and historically conservative government agency required Wells Haslem’s assistance this year (2015) to improve its image with various stakeholders, as part of a new focus on “reinventing the ATO”. The ATO’s new leadership team has been driving this transformation program and its success may be determined by the organisation’s ability to communicate with all stakeholders in a clear, concise and convenient manner. The challenges of successfully communicating often complex content with all Australians, their financial advisers, governmental departments, Ministers and their offices, along with other stakeholders, are considerable. The ATO has responsibility for administering the Australian Federal Taxation System and Superannuation legislation).

Wells Haslem has helped the ATO on a number of projects this year (and many more over the past decade).

Our writing projects have included: assessing, reviewing and re-writing external website content for everyday taxpayers into plain English; re-writing intranet content for employees into plain English; re-writing technical legal documents for internal ease of use. Roadshow We were also asked to work with the ATO to develop a Practitioner Roadshow (“Community Conversations”) to help educate the business community and the broader public about the positive changes taking place within the ATO. We helped the ATO educate tax practitioners, tax agents and general taxpayers on tax practitioner changes; small business changes; MyTax changes; and other relevant matters. Wells Haslem worked with a large internal ATO team (reporting to various internal stakeholders) to develop a comprehensive strategy and realistic way forward for the organisation. We then assisted the ATO in implementing the plans. We sought the assistance of chambers of commerce in each region as they were the lifeline of their local business communities. We developed feedback channels for those stakeholders, especially the general public. Wells Haslem developed media materials and liaised with media outlets ahead of Roadshows. We crafted letters to the politicians and advised on engagement. We provided event support and direction.
